The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the cradle of military leadership, shaping young aspirants into future officers of the Indian Armed Forces. Getting selected for NDA is a moment of pride, but the real journey begins after selection. Life at NDA is rigorous, transformative, and full of challenges, designed to instill discipline, leadership, and resilience in cadets.

This blog provides an in-depth look at what happens after selection, from the initial induction to the final commissioning into the armed forces.

1. Reporting and Induction at NDA

After clearing the written exam, SSB interview, and medical examination, the selected candidates receive their joining instructions from the NDA headquarters. The new cadets report to NDA, Khadakwasla (Pune), and their military journey begins.

Upon arrival, cadets undergo documentation, medical re-verification, and orientation to understand the academy's rules, discipline, and training structure. This marks the beginning of their three-year transformative training.

2. NDA Training Structure

Life at NDA revolves around a structured training program covering academics, military drills, and physical fitness. The three-year course is divided into six terms (each of six months), followed by one year of specialized training at respective service academies.

Academics

NDA follows a comprehensive academic curriculum affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Cadets pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Science, or Computer Science, balancing military training with education.

  • Science Stream: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Science

  • Humanities Stream: Political Science, Economics, History, Geography, and Languages

  • Technical Training: Engineering basics for Army, Air Force, and Navy cadets

Military Training

  • Drill and Parade: Cadets learn the basics of military discipline, marching, and formations.

  • Service-Specific Training:

    • Army cadets: Infantry tactics and field operations.

    • Navy cadets: Navigation, seamanship, and ship handling.

    • Air Force cadets: Aerodynamics, aircraft mechanics, and flight training basics.

Physical Training and Sports

Fitness is a core aspect of NDA life, ensuring cadets develop endurance, strength, and agility.

  • Daily PT (Physical Training): Running, push-ups, endurance drills.

  • Obstacle Courses: Enhancing stamina, courage, and mental toughness.

  • Swimming & Horse Riding: Mandatory for all cadets.

  • Sports: Football, basketball, hockey, volleyball, boxing, and athletics to promote teamwork and sportsmanship.

3. Daily Routine at NDA

Cadets follow a highly disciplined routine that starts before dawn and continues till late evening.

Typical Daily Schedule:

This disciplined lifestyle helps cadets develop time management, self-reliance, and resilience.

4. NDA Culture and Traditions

NDA has a rich heritage of traditions that instill a strong sense of pride and camaraderie among cadets.

  • Squadron System: Every cadet is assigned to one of the 18 squadrons, fostering a competitive spirit.

  • Passing Out Parade (POP): The grand finale of NDA training, where cadets move on to their respective service academies.

  • Cross-Country Runs & Camps: Designed to test endurance and survival skills.

  • Leadership Training: Senior cadets mentor juniors, building leadership qualities.

5. Specialized Training After NDA

After three years at NDA, cadets move to respective academies for one-year advanced military training:

  • Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun – Army cadets

  • Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad – Air Force cadets

  • Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala – Navy cadets

6. Challenges and Rewards
